Getting Started
Introductory information regarding our products and services. If you are new to Fortin products this is the place to get started.
Can I update the firmware on my Bypass module? Not all Fortin Bypass modules are updatable by Internet. If the Bypass module has a bar-code with a 12-character serial number on its sticker the preloaded firmware can be updated by Internet. Why should I update the firmware on my Bypass module? All Bypass modules are preloaded at the factory with the latest firmware available at the time of manufacture. Since that time we may have enhanced the firmware to include support for new vehicles, added fun...
What Bypass will work on my car and what does it do? Please visit www.ifar.ca and look up your vehicle make, model and year by using the search tools located at the very top of the page. The Web site contains all the information needed to determine what bypass you need for your specific application including the required firmware version of updatable Bypass modules. Please note that alarm disarm is NOT transponder bypass. The information will clearly state Transponder bypass. Where can I find a co...
What is data-link? Data-link is a high speed data communication link used between more than one after-market electronic device. These devices include remote-starters, alarm systems, GPS and telematics devices, and immobilizer bypass or interface module(s). The data-link protocol uses the EIA (Electronic Industries Association) RS-232 serial connection and communication standard. This is the exact same communication standard used with USB, which allows various electronic devices to communicate with ea...

Articles relating to the installation and programming of our products. These articles contain the latest information and cover special instances that are not covered in each of the products generic installation manuals.
The bypass kit fails to program or bypass the transponder system when remote-starting the vehicle and the vehicle cannot be started with the key after installation. The PK3 source (+12v constant, Red/White) was accidentally shorted to ground during the installation and the fuse has blown. Replace the 10A fuse in the driver's kick panel.
The support article applies to remote car starter installations with a CAN-SL2 on a General Motors vehicle using installation configuration 15 or 16. The CAN-SL2 will program but the remote car starter will fail to start the vehicle. The Ignition and Accessory wire are connected to the incorrect wires at the BCM connector. There are several wires at the BCM connector that have the same color as the Ignition and Accessory wires and the incorrect wire is used to connect the Ignition and Accessory outputs f...
This article applies to CAN-SL2 installations with a INT-VW2 or INT-VW3. One of the following situations will occur: Problem A: The CAN-SL2 will have problems programming and will not program on the first attempt. Problem B: The tachometer output through 2-way data-link is either intermittent or does not operate as expected. A diode is required to isolate the ignition from the the remote car starter from powering the vehicle. The diode permits the remote starter to see voltage from the vehicles ign...
By default the Compustar, Arctic Start and NU-Start remote-start/alarm modules are not programmed out of the box to communicate with the Fortin 2-way data-link protocol. These modules must have a programming Group - Option (4-11) changed to Optional Setting 2 to communicate with Fortin bypass modules through the RS-232 2-way Data-Link plug. Option Programming using a 1-way Remote: 1) Hold down the LOCK + START buttons for 2.5 seconds, then release. The parking lights will flash once to con...
The battery gets drained during cold weather on 2008 and newer GM vehicles when using either a CAN-SL2 or CAN-SL-PL. This situation occurs when the vehicle is not being used regularly during cold temperatures. The additional battery consumption is caused by the module on the factory immobilizer circuit. The factory immobilizer on GM vehicles must be constantly energised in order to perform an immobilizer bypass during remote-start. The module requires an idle-current of 3mA with all vehicles, but requir...
